Sir Henry Irving (1838-1905) was a renowned theatre man and actor manager in 19th century London. The present characterful and finely modelled bust depicts Sir Henry Irving as Shakespeare's Hamlet, as he produced and acted in several productions of Shakespeare in the London's Lyceum Theatre. A plaster version of the present bust is in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London (inv.no. S.292-1980).
