Victory
bronze, on an ebonised wood base
21cm., 8¼in. overall
Alfred Gilbert conceived his figure of Victory in 1887 to surmount the orb held by Queen Victoria in his Jubilee Memorial to the monarch in Winchester. The present work is one of a number of edited versions, which were cast in bronze and silver and in varying sizes. Gilbert's Victory became one of his best-known and most emblematic works. The model was a personal favourite and his gift of choice for friends including the painter John Singer Sargeant.
