Lawrence of Arabia—Thomas Lowell
With Lawrence in Arabia: a Lowell Thomas Adventure Film. Kodak Cinegraph 16mm. film reel [No. 1509], 1927
92ft. reel of 16mm film, housed in original printed cardboard box, short scratch affecting a few title frames, slight wear to box
RARE. This film was shot in 1918 by Lowell Thomas, the journalist famous for bringing T.E. Lawrence to international prominence. Thomas travelled to Palestine under the aegis of the British Foreign Office, where he met Lawrence, who was spending £200,000 a month encouraging Palestinian inhabitants to rebel against the Turks. Thomas and cameraman Harry Chase spent several weeks with Lawrence in the desert. Lawrence agreed to furnish Thomas with material, on the proviso that Thomas would photograph and interview Arab leaders.
The reel opens with a portrait still of Lawrence, then cuts to scenes captioned 'Supplies for Lawrence being loaded at Port Sudan', 'Scenes on board the transport', 'Unloading on the Arabian Coast', 'Col. Lawrence and the Emir Feisal in their "Royal Limousine"', 'Lawrence's squadron of armored cars on a railway raid', 'The Emir Feisal' (posing in front of his tent), 'Lawrence's irregulars — his main army', 'The Arabian Regulars', and lastly 'The Arabian army moving up to battle and a typical attack'.
