Description

Augustus Quirinius Rivinus

Introductio generalis in rem herbarium. Ordines plantarum quae sunt flore irregulari. Leipzig: for the author, 1690-1699

4 parts in one volume, large folio (447 x 290mm.), 385 engraved plates, contemporary calf, gilt arms to sides, spine in six compartments with raised bands gilt, red morocco label to spine, marbled endpapers, some browning and offsetting, skilfully rebacked retaining original morocco label

VERY RARE. There was no copy of this work in the Plesch collection and de Belder had a copy with only 244 plates. Collation of this rare work is difficult, and most bibliographies disagree. The present copy has one more plate than called for in Nissen. In this work, Rivinus sets out his system of classification based on floral structure. Rivinus pioneered the binomial system of nomenclature.
