Palestine—Bonfils and others
A collection of three albums, one portfolio, and 7 large format photographs of Jerusalem and Palestine, comprising:
i. Photographies de Terre Sainte. Jerusalem: F.F. Marroum, [no date]. Oblong folio album (245 x 310mm.), title-page lettered in gilt, 48 albumen print photographs (mostly 225 x 280mm.; one linen-backed folding panorama of Jerusalem, 212 x 815mm.), many photographs captioned "Bonfils" in negative, manuscript captions to mounts, olive wood boards with Jerusalem cross to upper board, some photographs faded, browning and spotting to mounts, joints splitting, spine ends slightly rubbed;
ii. Souvenirs D'Orient. Terre-Sainte. Album pittoresque des Sites, Villes et Ruines les plus remarquables de la Palestine. Alais and Beyrouth: [1878]. Oblong 8vo album (129 x 172mm.), printed title, table of contents, 30 gelatin print photographs, each on card mounts with rubricated borders, each photograph with facing text leaf, red cloth gilt, spine with raised bands in six compartments, upper cover with cross of Jerusalem and "Bonfils, phot. Alais Gard" lettered in gilt, gilt edges, silk endpapers, dampstaining to binding;
iii. Oblong folio album (265 x 360mm.), 107 albumen print photographs, including 15 photographs of the Holy Land captioned Bonfils in negative, other photographs depicting architecture and art in European cities and paintings of English monarchs, black morocco album, "C.A." stamped in gilt to upper cover, some photographs slightly faded at extremities, light browning and spotting to mounts;
iv. 33 albumen print photographs of Jerusalem (213 x 272mm. each), housed in red morocco portfolio (371 x 312mm.), each mounted on blue card, "Orient" lettered in gilt on upper cover, corners of mounts bumped and becoming fragile, portfolio very rubbed;
v. 7 large format albumen print photographs of the Holy Land (each c.385 x 295mm.), subjects including the Via Dolorosa, the River Jordan, the Tomb of the Virgin Mary, the Damascus Gate, the Tower of Forty Martyrs, and the Garden of Gethsemane, individually mounted on card, one captioned "Bonfils" in negative, slight fading at extremities
A good collection of photographs of the Holy land, many attributable to Félix Bonfils.
