A momonari kabuto [peach-shaped helmet]

Momoyama - Edo period, late 16th - early 17th century


the red lacquered two plate iron bowl of momonari [peach-shaped] form with a central raised ridge, decorated in red takamaki-e with bonji [Sanskrit characters], plain red lacquer mabisashi [peak] and fukigaeshi [turnbacks], single tiered shikoro [neck guard] with kebiki odoshi [close-spaced lacing] in dark blue braid, yak hair edging, metal kuwagata [stylised horns] of later date


The bowl to peak: 24.5 cm., 9⅝ in.

The shikoro to peak: 27.2 x cm., 10¾ in.
