A koboshi kabuto [helmet with standing rivets] and mempo [face mask] 

Momoyama - Edo period, late 16th - early 17th century


the sixty-two plate iron bowl with standing rivets, terminating in a four-stage copper-gilt tehen kanamono, the first stage chased and engraved with scrollwork on a nanako ground, the black lacquered mabisashi [peak] with hammered brow, small fukigaeshi [turnbacks], four-tiered black lacquer shikoro [neckguard] with sugake odoshi [spaced lacing] in dark blue braid, the gold lacquered maedate [forecrest] in the form of an inome [stylised boar's eye], the wakidate [side crests] in the form of stylised horns, the black lacquered iron mempo [face mask] forged with deep wrinkles, narrow nose and open mouth, detachable nose plate, red lacquer interior, four-tiered yodaregake [throat protector] laced in matching braid, this lot is sold with a wood helmet stand as illustrated


The bowl to peak: 25.5 cm., 10⅛ in. 

The shikoro to peak: 29.3 cm., 11⅝ in. 

The mempo: 16 cm., 6⅜ in. wide
