Description

The Property of a European Collector

A hanbo [half mask]

Momoyama period, late 16th century

the patinated russet iron hanbo forged with pronounced yadome [standing flanges] to the cheeks, red lacquer interior, three-tiered red lacquer yodaregake [throat protector] with sugake odoshi [spaced-lacing] in dark blue braid, the illustrated fitted black metal stand is sold with this lot

15 cm., 6 in. wide

It seems from the style, forging and patina, this face mask may have come from the workshops of Yoshimichi/Takayoshi. It closely resembles a drawing illustrated in the Meiko zukan (1732), see Robert Burawoy, Études du Meiko Zukan: Armuriers du Japon XVIe-XVIIIe siècle, (Paris, 2008), pg. 124.
