Small folio (323 x 191mm.), 71 watercolour illustrations on paper, with watermarks including TW 1794, TW 1797, J &M 1818 and Kent 1821, after plates by Donovan, Wood, Swainson, Lewin, Edwards and others, with manuscript captions in Latin and English, signed "W Goodall", later maroon half morocco, occasional very light spots
William Goodall (1757-1844) was a natural history artist and a priest who lived in Dinton Hall, Buckinghamshire. He produced careful illustrations of animals, birds and insects from works by Edward Donovan, William Swainson, William Lewin and others, and captioned them with their Linnaean name, a Latin description, the plate number of the work they were from, the country, and the genus.
