Description

Pierre Auguste Joseph Drapiez

Herbier de l’amateur de fleurs. Brussels: P.J. de Mat, 1828-1835

8 volumes bound in 4, 4to (275 x 205mm.), half-titles, 600 hand-coloured engraved plates, contemporary half calf, spines gilt with green labels, some spotting and foxing

The first edition with this title, this work is a re-issue of the Herbier géneral de l’amateur (1814-1827, see lot 437), with 26 additional plates. Drapiez was merely the compiler of this work, although his is the only name to appear on the title. The plates are all after Pancrace Bessa with the exception of one after Redouté and one after Poiteau. Bessa was Redouté’s most distinguished pupil and his abilities are here displayed to good effect.
