Nathaniel Whittock (1791-1860) was best known as a topographical engraver, publishing notable views of cities including Oxford, London and Melbourne. He ran the Oxford Drawing Academy, worked as a teacher of drawing for the University of Oxford, and was employed by the Ashmolean Museum. He also published numerous instruction manuals for various types and methods of drawing, painting and lithography: these two comparatively rare examples, one covering flowers, fruit, and shells, the other birds, beasts, fishes, and insects, form part of this impressive corpus.
