Arthur Hay, 9th Marquis of Tweeddale (1824-1878), became president of the Zoological Society of London in 1868. He was a noted zoological collector, and employed Carl Bock to travel to maritime south-east Asia to gather specimens. Between them, they discovered and described about 40 new species.
