The Jewish Community in Pressburg (Bratislava) prospered under the leadership of the Chatam Sofer in the first half of the 19th century, becoming the largest in Slovakia. In 1862-63, under his son Rabbi Abraham Sofer, a large and elaborate synagogue with hundreds of seats was built in Zámocká Street. This was retained by the dominant Orthodox community in the schism following the General Jewish Congress of Budapest (1868-1869). Damaged during the Second World War, it was demolished in the 1960s.
