A Large Italian Copper Synagogue Plaque, 18th-19th century
the rectangular plaque with cut corners, embossed by scrolling foliage, central oval reserve embossed possibly later with menorah and Hebrew inscription
Height 39 in. by Width 24 in. (86.4 by 61 cm)
The central Hebrew inscription reads, “Donated by Aaron bar Jonah.”
Large reflectors were placed behind candles in 17th and 18th century interiors, both domestic and institutional. Judaic examples can still be seen in the Alt Neuschul, Prague, hanging above the benches lining the walls. Shalom Sabar, whose article on this piece accompanies it, thinks this example may have started as a domestic piece with a plain center, and that the menorah and inscription embossed on it were added when it was donated to a synagogue.
