Description
A Galician Silver Torah Shield, dated 1758
rectangular, chased with grapevine-covered columns flanking tablets, surrounded by strapwork with two lions, chased with Hebrew inscriptions and later set with pastes, struck with three Austro-Hungarian control marks for Salzburg 1806-10
Height with bells 10 in. (25.4 cm)
Along the sides: “Shemariah ben Isaac, may the memory of the righteous be a blessing, in the year [5]518 [1758].” The stones seem to have been added later, as they cover up parts of the inscription.
