Macklowe Gallery, 2010

This exceptionally rare paperweight vase is a visual reminder of the Tiffany glasshouse adapting to Louis Tiffany’s absence after 1919 and the death of many, if not all, of their original gaffers. It was made not by encasing a design within the thick transparent glass as the company had previously done, but instead by using a special reactive glass. It was a material Leslie Nash was well familiar with, conducting many experiments with it in 1914 in the creation of the first iconic Morning Glory vases. This unusual glass was carefully and precisely placed between the layers of transparent glass. Then, by touching the exterior of the hot glass with cooler metal forms, the inner layer chemically reacted to the focused temperature change and turned a vivid yellow, forming stylized leaves as a result.
