Described as a ‘ONE OF ONE ORIGINAL ART SERIES’ the Nike 'Black Laser Series', was one of Nike's most enigmatic productions. Revealed exclusively in 2004 at Alexander McQueen's first London show since leaving the country, the set includes a pair of Nike Air Max 90 SL Laser, a Rider Jacket, and an Epic Backpack.
Alexander McQueen, the late British designer for the eponymous brand, hosted his first catwalk event in London after 3 years, following his relocation to Paris in 2000. For one night at Earls Court 2, the Alexander McQueen Black event saw international icons like Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell feature in one of McQueen's most historically significant shows.
Instead of releasing a collection to the public, McQueen held a retrospective for some of his top pieces. Highlights included selections from his Highland Rape collection, the Dante line, and the Paris La Conciergerie show - all dramatically displayed and modelled inside a glass box. Following this exclusive retrospective, McQueen organised the Black auction, along with an extravagant party to celebrate the event.
Amongst the most interesting lots in the auction was a Nike selection entitled the ‘Black Laser Series’. The lot included a pair of Nike Air Max 90 SL Laser, a sample Nike Epic Backpack, and Leather Rider Jacket, all featuring Celtic-style laser engraved motifs.
This Nike Air Max 90 is one of the more unique Air Max models produced and represents one of Nike’s most impressive executions from the era. Finished on May 27th, 2004, the Nike Air Max 90 SL Laser credits a number of individuals to the pair's execution, highlighting the level of quality and expertise involved - each with their names and responsibilities embossed into the box.
Beyond the manufacturing, the team carefully chose a premium suede cowhide for the upper, adorned by Nike’s laser technology, and accompanied by genuine pig leather sock lining. The box is constructed in leather and finished in suede, featuring a unique embossed label and logo. The box tag indicates that this is a one-of-one final product produced by Nike - and made in the USA.
The accompanying Rider Jacket and Epic Backpack also feature the same laser engraving technology and high-level execution found on the sneakers. These two pieces, with the design spearheaded by Tom Luedecke and stitched by Chanhmy Vongxay, are some of the most impressive products manufactured by Nike in terms of material quality and finishing.
This lot is incredibly important as it is not just a reflection of one of Nike’s rarest commissions, but is also representative of the narrowing bridge between Nike’s domain of sport and the world of luxury and fashion.
