Built in New England in 1860 and weighing an astonishing 2,000 tons, The Downeaster-W.S. Babcock, was considered one of the fastest clipper ships afloat at that time.


The painting was commissioned by Robert I. Ingles, an associate with the Ingles Shipbuilding Company of Alabama and Mississippi.
