Costa Rican Brownware Vessel, Guanacaste-Nicoya region, circa AD 1000 - 1300

Acquired by 1971 (listed as no. 106 in the September 10, 1973 appraisal of the collection)
Richly patinated in a lustrous chocolate brown, the gently sloping shoulder supports a small seated animal resting his paws on his belly and leaning against the rounded spout. A finely incised geometric band encircles the base of the spout.
