Description

Colima Seated Figure, Comala style, Protoclassic, circa 100 BC - AD 250

Height: 14 ⅝ in (37 cm)

Acquired by 1971 (listed as no. 69 in the September 10, 1973 appraisal of the collection)

Rarely do Colima figures of the Comala style exhibit such architectural form. The interplay of openwork and solid form is fully achieved in this “Thinker’ style figure. The characteristic coffee-bean eyes and pursed lips define the meditative expression, and the small “horn” protrusion from the forehead relates the figure to the shaman genre.
