Description

Nayarit Seated Figure, Lagunillas Type B, Protoclassic, circa 100 BC - AD 250

Height: 10 ¼ in (26 cm)

Acquired by 1971 (listed as no. 16 in the September 10, 1973 appraisal of the collection)

The Lagunillas Type B figures are known for their meditative, reserved demeanor and heart-shaped heads with delicate features. The inflated stylized bodies are accentuated by the slender arms, extended legs and small breasts, with careful attention paid to the painted adornment, shown here by her tasseled armbands, dotted waistband, and fingernails.

See Hasso von Winning, Shaft Tomb Figures of West Mexico, Los Angeles, 1974, p. 173, fig. 313, for the type. For a highly similar figure in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, see Dorie Reents-Budet and Dennis Carr, Arts of the Ancient Americas, Boston, 2019, pp. 62-63.
