The present work depicts Loch Stenness, a large brackish loch on the mainland of Orkney. The area is known for its natural beauty and incredible density of Neolithic sites and monuments.

In this work Cursiter shows the landscape dusted with a layer of snow and bathed in a soft winter light. This feel for light and colour is reminiscent of Cursiter's fellow Scottish Artists F.C.B. Cadell and S.J. Peploe who painted on the Hebridean island of Iona.
