Description
A Fine Classical Carved Mahogany Recamier
attributed to Charles H. White (1796-1876)
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Circa 1825
Height 33 3/4 in. by Width 74 in. by Depth 23 in.
A near identical pair of Classical carved mahogany recamiers labeled, Charles H. White Cabinet/WAREROOMS No 109 Walnut St. were sold in these rooms, Important Americana, January 16, 1998, sale 7087, lot 363, as well as Sotheby's, New York, Important Americana, January 19, 2001, sale 7590, lot 626. This pair of recamiers signed by White, like the subject, have a double incised back with elevated leaf-carved scroll terminal, acanthus leaf carved scrolled headrest and footrest, and a gadrooned apron ending on pierced bracketed paw feet. In comparison, the craftsmanship of White's rival, Anthony Gabriel Quervelle demonstrated by Kirtley reveals a form that is elongated horizontally moreso than vertically with a tighter back scroll, more densely and superfluously carved throughout, and lacking the gadrooned apron.
