The Sierra Club Outing, 1930
17(of 23) gelatin silver prints from The Sierra Club Outing (San Francisco: self-published, 1930, an edition of 8), a presentation copy to Francis Tappaan, each signed ‘Ansel E. Adams’ in pencil in the margin and titled in pencil on the reverse, 1930; together with the letterpress title/colophon/dedication, numbered 'I' in ink. Small folio, green linen portfolio with flaps, stamped leather title on the spine, and leather ties, no. 1 in a total edition of 8; accompanied by a facsimile typed letter from Ansel Adams to Francis Tappaan dated ‘December 22nd, 1930’

Clair Tappaan was the fifth president of the Sierra Club, from 1922-1924. His son Francis ‘Tap’ Tappaan managed the early Sierra Club outings and was President of the Club from 1940-41.
At the time of this writing, four of the 1930 Sierra Club Outing portfolios have been located: a set in the Bancroft Library at the University of California, Berkeley (number 2); a set sold at Sotheby's on 22 April 2006 (number 5); a set sold at Sotheby’s from The David H. Arrington Collection on 14 December 2020 (number 3); and the incomplete portfolio offered here, number 1 from the edition.
