Anne Pontegnie, Mike Kelly: Educational Complex Onwards 1995 - 2008 (Brussels: Wiels Contemporary Art Centre, 2008) p. 189
Mike Kelley’s monumental project The Extracurricular Activity Projective Reconstruction was an intended sequence of 365 video restagings of photographs Kelley sourced from school yearbooks depicting extracurricular activities. This project relates to an earlier body of work, Educational Complex (1995), which featured architectural replicas of schools that Kelley attended and reconstructed from memory. The Extracurricular Activity Projective Reconstruction addresses ritual, memory, and Kelley’s own struggle with trauma caused by abuse he endured as a child. The video reconstructions were part of a sprawling exhibition at Gagosian Gallery in 2005 that included props, drawings, and photographs. The present work, a diptych in an edition of 5, includes a still from the video paired with the source photograph that inspired it.
