Possibly the painting traditionally said to have been given by the artist to Allan Ramsay (1713-1784);
Possibly by inheritance to his wife's nephew Sir John Archibald Murray (1778–1859) (according to the SNG note);
Possibly sold posthumously ('from the late Lord Murray's Collection'), Edinburgh, Francis Dewar, 3 or 7 November 1862, (catalogue untraced);
Mr Robert Paterson, Edinburgh;
