Rutilio Manetti and Domenico Manetti
(Siena 1571 - 1639) and (Siena 1609 - 1663)
Saint Sebastian and the Pious Women
oil on canvas, with two red wax seals on the reverse of the stretcher
unframed: 124.3 x 148 cm.; 48⅞ x 58¼ in.
framed: 145.1 x 169.9 cm.; 57⅛ x 66⅞ in.
Probably acquired in Vienna by the grandfather of the present owner, in the first half of the 20th century;
Thence by descent.
We are grateful to Dott. Marco Ciampolini for proposing the attribution of this painting, on the basis of photographs, to both Rutilio Manetti and his son Domenico, whose hand is identifiable in the faces of the figures.
In the last years of Rutilio's life, Domenico routinely collaborated with his father, in works such as L'innocenza della vestale Tuccia, today in the Pinacoteca Nazionale, Siena.1
