Anonymous sale (‘The Property of a Gentleman’), London, Christie's, 26 November 1971, lot 24 (as Niccolò di Segna);
With Hal O'Nians, London (as Niccolò di Segna);
From whom acquired, on 6 February 1974, by the previous owner;
From whose Estate acquired by the present owner.
J.H. Stubblebine, Duccio di Buoninsegna and his school, Princeton 1979, vol. I, p. 93, reproduced vol. II, fig. 209 (as by the Monte Oliveto Master).

Stubblebine (see Literature) compares the Madonna in this painting to that in the eponymous work of the Monte Oliveto Master.1 He also points out that the panel has been reduced along the upper margin, truncating the gable and the angels' heads, and also suggests that the Madonna was probably originally full-length. There are numerous differences between the 1979 reproduction of the painting and its current appearance, including changes to the finials on each arm of the throne, and the border and stars decorating the Madonna's robe.
