This view of Chelsea Reach features a prominent view of Chelsea Old Church with Albert Bridge in the distance. The church, whose foundations were established in the Norman period, became the Private Chapel of Sir Thomas More when he rebuilt the Church in 1528. The main portion, visible in the painting, shows a later construction of about 1670. Another prominent feature of the painting is Alldin's Coal Wharf, which was eventually swept away during the construction of the Chelsea Embankment in 1866.
Another version of this composition by Pether, dated to 1850, is preserved in the Museum of London.1
