This work is based on a composition currently in the State Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg, ascribed to the circle of Adam Elsheimer (1578–1610),1 although it has been suggested it may have been executed by David Teniers the Elder (1582–1649). Another version of this composition, also given to the circle of Elsheimer, is also recorded in the The Hallwyl Museum, Stockholm.2
