This painting shares an affinity with the works of the fourteenth-century painter Paolo Veneziano (act. 1324–1362), whom Berenson described as 'nearly as Byzantine as if trained and working at Constantinople'.1 This particular depiction of the Madonna and Child bears some resemblance to a work by Veneziano preserved at the Norton Simon Museum, Pasadena.2 The Zeri photo archive also records other repetitions of this composition, variously given to Catarino Veneziano (State Pushkin Museum, Moscow); 'anonymous Venetian school 14th century' (Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza, Madrid); and 'anonymous Adriatic school, 14th century' (sold in these rooms, 29 May 2003, lot 81). Pigment analysis undertaken on the work favours a dating in the fourteenth-century.
