Follower of Paolo Veneziano

This painting shares an affinity with the works of the fourteenth-century painter Paolo Veneziano (act. 1324–1362), whom Berenson described as 'nearly as Byzantine as if trained and working at Constantinople'.¹ This particular depiction of the Madonna and Child bears some resemblance to a work by Veneziano preserved at the Norton Simon Museum, Pasadena.² The Zeri photo archive also records other repetitions of this composition, variously given to Catarino Veneziano (State Pushkin Museum, Moscow); 'anonymous Venetian school 14th century' (Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza, Madrid); and 'anonymous Adriatic school, 14th century' (sold in these rooms, 29 May 2003, lot 81). Pigment analysis undertaken on the work favours a dating in the fourteenth-century.
