Dated to about 1660 (according to the RKD), this meticulous still life of partridges and a sole kingfisher is typical of Melchior d'Hondecoeter's hunting still lifes in this particular upright format set against a dark background.1 A very similar arrangement of the partridges in this painting can be found in a canvas preserved in the Muzeum Narodowe w Gdańsku, Gdańsk, Poland.2
