Description

Property of a Distinguished Private Collector

Southern Italian, probably Trapani, first half 18th century

Saint Paul

alabaster, with traces of gilding and polychromy, on a slate base

22.7cm., 9in. overall

Christie's London, 5 July 2007, lot 126

The ornate scroll base containing a small relief with the Sacrifice of Isaac indicates an origin of the present figure among the alabaster workshops in Trapani. Compare, for example, the base of the figure of Saint Sebastian at Anglesey Abbey, illustrated in Warren, op. cit., fig. 8. The carving of the present Saint's head and drapery is unusually sophisticated.
