The British sculptor John Warrington Wood specialised in biblical and mythological themes and portrait busts. He exhibited works at the Royal Academy in London during the early stages of his career and moved to Rome in 1861. Some of his works are in important public collections, including a bust of Sir Austen Henry Layard (1817–1894) in the National Gallery, London, and two colossal sculptures portraying the Renaissance artists Raphael and Michelangelo placed at the entrance of the Walker Gallery of Art, Liverpool.
