Bacchus

bronze, on a veined brown marble base

bronze: 31.5cm., 12⅜in.

base: 4.5cm., 1¾in.

This charming bronze of Bacchus, the god of wine and festivity, exhibits stylistic traits of the Venetian Roccatagliata workshop. The figure is usually depicted pouring wine from a carafe into a cup – attributes that have been lost in the present cast. The model sometimes forms a pair with a bronze image of Ceres, the goddess of agriculture, fertility, and harvest.
