The present work is a bust-length copy after Van Dyck's full-length portrait from 1633 of Queen Henrietta Maria with Sir Jeffrey Hudson, which today hangs in the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C. (inv. no. 1952.5.39).Van Dyck infused his portraits of the English royal family, including his depiction of Queen Henrietta Maria at age 24, with a tenderness and warmth of expression that fully convey the ideals of peace and harmony that underlay their philosophy of divine right to rule.
