Said to have come by descent from Henry Cromwell, the sitter's son;
Probably thence to his sister Frances Russell (1638-1720);
Thence by descent to her daughter Elizabeth Frankland (d. 1733), Thirkleby Hall, Yorkshire;
Anonymous sale, London, Sotheby's, 22 November 2007, lot 15;
With Philip Mould, London;
From whom acquired by the present owner.

This portrait is a variant of the painting by Walker dating from 1649.1 It differs from the standard image in showing a page to the right of the composition.
