English politician Anthony Ashley Cooper, 1st Earl of Shaftesbury, was one of the founding members and leading figures of the Whig party. He was also the patron of philosopher and physician John Locke (1632–1704).
A full-length portrait of Anthony Ashley Cooper by John Greenhill, which depicts him at a more advanced age than the present work, is in the collection of the Earl of Shaftesbury, at St Giles House, Wimborne St Giles; a copy of the latter of half-length format is in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery, London.1
