Rome 1623 - 1694

Narcissus seated in a wooded landscape with dogs and Cupid flying above

oil on canvas

unframed: 29.4 x 22.4 cm.; 11½ x 8¾ in.

framed: 59.2 x 53.5 cm.; 23¼ x 21⅛ in.

In the family collection of the Marquess of Downshire for three generations.

Born and active in Rome, Filippo Lauri initially trained under his father Balthasar Lauwers (1578–1645), a Flemish landscape painter whose name was later italicised to Lauri, and then under his brother-in-law Angelo Caroselli and Pietro da Cortona. Lauri developed a refined and elegant style in the classical tradition evident in his small-scale cabinet pictures of landscape and mythological subjects, which possess an idyllic charm that anticipates 18th-century art. He also painted large-scale decorative frescoes in the Church of Santa Maria della Pace, a commission he won through Pietro da Cortona, and a room in the Palazzo Borghese.

A larger version of the present composition attributed to Lauri is preserved at the Ackland Art Museum, Chapel Hill, North Carolina.1
