Description
Giovanni Maria Morandi
Florence 1622 - 1717 Rome
Vision of Saint Bruno of Cologne
Red chalk and red wash, heightened with white;
bears attribution in black chalk on the mount, lower centre: Domenico Maria Viani 1695 Bologna
186 by 153 mm
Most probably intended for an altarpiece or devotional painting, this emotive and spiritual depiction of the Vision of Saint Bruno of Cologne is not connected to any of the artist's known projects. The choice of media, red chalk and red wash, heightened with white, is highly distinctive of Morandi's drawings, a technique he adopted from his Florentine teacher, Giovanni Bilivert (1585-1644).
Stylistically close to Morandi's Adoration of the Holy Sacrament of 1696, a dating for this drawing to the 1680s or 1690s is conceivable.1
