The attribution to Baldini was first suggested by Dr. Jörg Merz in 1988, who also proposed that the drawing might relate to an altarpiece of The Madonna with Saint Matthew and Saint Cecilia in the Buratti Chapel in San Nicolò da Tolentino, Rome, which was decorated by Baldini between 1642 and 1648.
