With The Fine Art Society, London, by 1981,
where acquired by the father of the present owner

The present drawing was made ‘on-the-spot’ on 27 September 1848. Roberts, who was Scottish, had been living in London since his return from the Middle East in 1839. In the late summer of 1848, however, he made a tour of Scotland, travelling as far north as Aberdeen and also visiting Dunkeld, Dunblane, Stirling, Linlithgow and Edinburgh.

Stirling Castle is one of the largest and most important castles in Scotland. Sitting atop Castle Hill, it is surrounded on three sides by steep cliffs. Roberts, one of the greatest British draughtsman of his age, captures the castle's mighty appearance and strong defensive location in this drawing.
