Thomas Rowlandson
London 1756 - 1827
A rural landscape, possibly Cornwall
Pen and brown ink and watercolour over traces of pencil
144 by 234 mm
This watercolour may represent Cornwall, a county that Rowlandson visited regularly from the 1790s until 1819, in order to see his friend and patron Matthew Michell (d. 1819) of Hengar House near Bodmin.
The present work has descended in the family of Ronald John Rickett, known as John, who was a director of British Pictures at Sotheby’s in the 1960s.
