Description
Olmiite Botryoid
Kalahari Manganese Fields, Northern Cape Province, South Africa
3 by 3 by 2 inches (7.6 x 7.6 x 5 cm). Custom lucite base.
An impressively-sized single olmiite botryoid specimen displaying a vibrant salmon color.
Olmiite is a fairly uncommon mineral, only being found in the Kalahari Manganese fields. It is also relatively new, having only been named by the International Mineralogical Association (IMA) in 2006. For many years it was considered to be poldervaartite, but recent analysis has shown showed olmiite to be a distinct species, making the specimen offered here particularly enticing.
