Description

Halite Crystals

Wintershall Potash Works, Heringen, Hersfeld-Rotenburg, Kassel Region, Hesse, Germany

9 by 7 by 4 inches (22.8 x 17.8 x 10.2 cm). Largest crystal measures 3¾ inches (9.6 cm). 7 pounds (3.2 kg). Custom lucite base.

A well-formed, large and crystallized, deep-blue halite specimen.

Halite of this color is well-known from New Mexico, but the German material is much more obscure. Most blue halite from this mine are small cleavage pieces, making this specimen comprised of fully formed crystals particularly unique. The blue color seen in the specimen offered here is electric when properly backlit, which is caused by the migration of electrons to Na+ ions, which reduce is Na metal.

The incredible, deep-blue halite specimen offered here yields from the Wintershall Potash Works, in Germany. Collectable specimens from this classic German locality are not common in today’s market.
