Description
Grossular Garnet on Hedenbergite
Vesper Peak, Snohomish County, Washington, United States
2¾ by 2¾ by 1¼ inches (6.9 x 6.9 x 3.2 cm). Largest garnet measures ½ inch (1.3 cm). Custom lucite base.
A grossular garnet specimen featuring several large and gemmy red-orange garnets on a hedenbergite matrix.
In use as gemstones and abrasives since the Bronze Age, garnets are a group of silicate minerals with similar crystal forms and physical properties, but different chemical configurations.
Garnet of the grossular variety is a calcium-aluminium composition with the red-orange gem garnets featured here being fairly large, and exhibits the rare cubic face for which the Vesper Peak locality is well-known.
