The present work was illustrated on the cover of Ludwig Bemelman’s fictional novel, Marina. Marina the seal is seen at the center of the composition and the story describes her family vacation at the beach. In the whimsical novel, Marina meanders down to the shore where a sneaky shark swallowed her in one gulp. A group of dolphins, “the clowns of the sea,” leapt to her rescue.
