The young girl in the present work is Willem Gerard Hofker's model Ni Dablig. On the 27th of January 1939, Hofker sketched Ni Dablig, who was standing in a statuesque manner with a basket on her head, along with artists Frida Holleman (1908- 1999) and Piet Rezelman (1887-1964). For Piet Rezelman’s rendition of Ni Dablig, see Venduehuis der Notarissen, 12 September 2018, Lot 134.
During this time, Willem Gerard Hofker and his wife Maria lived in Den Pasar. The present lot would have been executed at his studio in his house, which was named Rumah Tebuh.
