Little is known of Vicenzo Mariotti, aside from the figures he carved for the Colonnade of St. Peter's, Rome. The present relief has been attributed to him based on stylistic details, including the angle of the Virgin's head and the execution of the clouds and the putti.

This composition is typical of the late Roman Baroque style, which was more restrained than the exuberant Baroque style of Bernini and was influenced by the work of painters such as Carlo Maratti (1625 - 1713) and is indebted to the high Renaissance compositions by Donatello (1386 - 1466).
