Virgin and Child

limestone with remains of polychromy

height 55 in.; 139.7cm.

D. Gillerman, Gothic Sculpture in America, Brepols, 2001, p. 19, cat. no. 14.

The present Virgin, dressed in a belted gown and with her mantle tucked underneath her elbow, supports the Child with her proper left hand and cradles his foot in her right hand. The Virgin’s drapery with the mantle falling on her hips in cascades of folds can be compared to a small group of similar compositions that were executed by Parisian workshops during the 14th century for churches around the Île-de-France region. This type of carving is exemplified by the two Virgins carved for the Church of Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul, Mainneville, both of which share the same details.1
